Have you registered your marriage overseas and now wish to have it officially recorded in Vietnam?
Vietnam National Law provides legal assistance to Vietnamese citizens who need to record a marriage registered with a competent foreign authority in the Vietnamese Civil Status Register.
We assist with document preparation, foreign document legalization, application submission and follow-up with the competent Vietnamese authorities.
1. Who Needs This Service?
This procedure may apply to a Vietnamese citizen who has registered their marriage overseas and wishes to have the marriage recorded in Vietnam. This procedure is different from registering a new marriage in Vietnam.
Required Documents
The following documents may be required, depending on the circumstances:
- Foreign Marriage Certificate (*)
- Vietnamese Spouse’s Identification Document and VNeID Level 2 Account, where required.
- Foreign Spouse’s Valid Passport
- Additional Supporting Documents, such as documents relating to a previous marriage, if applicable.
- Address Information for Both Spouses (Vietnamese and Foreign National)
The exact requirements depend on the country where the marriage was registered and the couple’s individual circumstances.
(*) Important Note: The foreign-issued Marriage Certificate must be apostilled or consularly legalized, where applicable, before being translated into Vietnamese and notarized/certified in Vietnam. Vietnam National Law also provides assistance with Apostille, consular legalization, Vietnamese translation and notarization procedures.

2. Marriage Registration Recording Procedure
Step 1: Initial Consultation
We review your circumstances and advise on the applicable procedure, competent authority and required documents.
Step 2: Document Preparation
We help review the Marriage Certificate and identify any applicable Apostille, legalization, translation and certification requirements.
Step 3: Application Submission
We assist with preparing the application dossier and submitting it to the competent Vietnamese authority.
Step 4: Follow-up and Result Collection
We follow up on the application and assist with obtaining the Marriage Registration Extract once the application has been approved.
3. Processing Time
The estimated processing time is 10 working days from the date a complete and valid application is submitted to the competent authority.
Additional time may be required for Apostille, consular legalization, translation and document certification, where applicable.
